Cell Phone turns into Microscope to diagnose Malaria with a new technology : MOPID

Cell Phone turns into Microscope to diagnose Malaria using a New technology : MOPID

A new low-cost technology that transforms a cellphone into a powerful, mobile microscope could significantly improve malaria diagnoses and treatment in developing countries, scientists say, reports PTI.
The technology includes an add-on device, which is similar in look and feel to a protective phone case. It makes use of a smartphone’s camera to produce high-resolution images of objects 10 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair, said Gerard Cote, professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station’s Center for Remote Health Technologies and Systems.

Cote developed the instrument, known as a mobile-optical-polarisation imaging device (MOPID), which is capable of accepting a small cartridge containing a patient’s blood-smear sample.

“What we’ve achieved with MOPID is the design of a polarized microscope platform using a cell phone, which can detect birefringence in histological specimens infected with the malaria parasite,” Coté says. “It’s a simple, low-cost, portable device that we believe is more sensitive than the standard microscope that uses white light and just as accurate as the more costly and complex benchtop version of a polarized microscope.”

MOPID, Coté explains, is capable of accepting a small cartridge containing a patient’s blood-smear sample. The sample is then imaged using polarized light in order to detect the presence of hemozoin crystals, Coté notes. Hemozoin crystals are the byproduct of the malaria parasite, and they occur in the blood of an infected host. As polarized light bounces off of these crystals, they appear as tiny bright dots when observed through the phone’s camera lens – enabling an instant, accurate diagnosis.

While polarized light has been the preferred option for malaria detection due to its increased sensitivity, its implementation into mainstream microscopy has been hindered by its complex configurations, maintenance, size and cost – up until now.

MOPID could represent a significant advancement in the detection methods for malaria, a disease that the World Health Organization estimates was responsible for 584,000 deaths in 2013, along with an estimated 198 million new cases in that span of time. Given those numbers, a dire need exists for a low-cost, accurate and portable method of detection, particularly in areas of the world with few resources, Coté says. Many of these regions, he notes, suffer from misdiagnoses due to inadequate or even nonexistent medical infrastructures – and the consequences can be devastating. While failure to treat malaria can be fatal, the administering of unnecessary malaria medications as a result of misdiagnoses can results in new, drug-resistant strains of the disease in addition to increasing costs for malaria medications, Coté notes.

Coté’s solution takes advantage of existing mobile phone technology and networks – something to which a whopping 75 percent of the world has access. This ever-increasing access to mobile networks and the fact that most mobile phones are equipped with advanced camera features make mobile phones the ideal platform for advanced imaging applications such as MOPID, Coté says.

The MOPID system has demonstrated both the resolution and specificity to detect malaria with both iOS- and Android-based devices and requires less user expertise than traditional microscopy, Coté says. That user-friendly aspect, coupled with the system’s portability and expected low cost of about $10 per unit, makes it an easily adoptable technology in low-resource areas ravaged by malaria, he adds.

The Power of Self Confidence

A short piece of inspiring story shared by one of my friend through email. It portraits the  hidden powers of the self confidence. Though not at such large scale, we too often encounter such phenomena in our life.
***
A business executive was deep in debt and could see no way out.  Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment.  He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save  his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him.  "I can see that something is troubling you," he said.  After listening to the executive's woes, the old man said, "I believe I can help you."  He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying,  "Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me  back at that time." Then he turned and disappeared as quickly as he had come.

The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller,  then one of the richest men in the world!
"I can erase my money worries in an instant!" he realized.Nonetheless, the executive decided to  put the check in his safe first. Just knowing it was there, would give him the strength to work  out away to save his business, he thought.
With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and got extended terms of payment from  creditors. Soon he could close some big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and  making money once again.

Exactly a year later, he returned to the park with that uncashed check. The old man did not  appear for some time yet the business executive decided to wait for a while more.

A while later  the old man came along the way but seemed to be unmindful of the business executive. He stopped  the old man and was about the hand over the cheque with a few words of thanks as well as share  his success story.

At the same time, he saw a nurse come running up and grabbing the old man. "I'm so glad I caught  him!" she cried. "I hope he hasn't been bothering you. He's always escaping from the rest home  and telling people he's John D. Rockefeller." And she led the old man away by the arm.

The astonished executive just stood there, stunned. All year long he'd been wheeling and  dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a million dollars behind him. Suddenly, he  realized that it wasn't the money, real or imagined, that had turned his life around. It was  his new found self-confidence that gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.  He understood that Confidence is nothing but the distant vision held positively no matter what  comes in between. It comes from one's own commitment and dedication and entirely internal.

"Our duty is to encourage everyone in his struggle to live up to his own highest idea, and  strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the truth"

Love Your Irritations

A piece of interesting collection shared by one of my friend through email . This is a good one, that guides us to have introspection of our weaknesses and a simple way that motivates us to overcome those negative traits. I am just sharing it here with thanks to the original source.
*****
Khalil Gibran, one of the greatest thinkers, once wrote: "I have learned silence from the talkative, tolerance from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am grateful to those teachers"
***

A psychiatrist was consulted by a man whose marriage and career were both in serious trouble. His problem was his constant irritability and bad temper. He was concerned about this himself, but if any one tried to discuss it with him, he exploded in anger. He constantly told himself that everyone was picking on him and that he had to defend himself against them.
To counter the negative auto suggestion, he advised him to use positive autosuggestion. Several times a day in the morning, noon, and at night prior to sleep he was to repeat to himself.

"From now on, I shall grow more good-humored. Joy, happiness, and cheerfulness are now becoming my natural states of mind.
Every day I am becoming more and more lovable and understanding.
I will be center of cheer and goodwill to all those around me, infecting them with my good spirits.
This happy, joyous, and cheerful mood is now becoming my normal, natural state of mind. I am grateful "

After a month, his wife and his coworkers remarked on how much easier he was to get along with.

The things that drive you crazy are actually giant opportunities. The people who press your buttons are actually your greatest teachers. The issues that make you angry are actually your biggest gifts. Be grateful to them. Love them.
The people or circumstances that take you out of your power have extraordinary value: they reveal your limiting beliefs, fears and false assumptions. The celebrated psychologist Carl Jung once said: "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves." Powerful point. The things that irritate, annoy and anger you are entry points into your evolution and elevation as a human being. They are signposts for what you need to work on and the fears you need to face. They are gifts of growth. You can blame the people who trigger you and make it all about them. Or you can do the wise thing and look deeply into yourself to discover the reason for your negative reaction. Use the challenges to grow self-awareness. Because how can you overcome a fear you are not even aware of? And how can you transcend an insecurity you don't even know you have?
As you begin to shed light on your personal weaknesses and take responsibility for them, you actually begin the very process of shedding them. You become stronger. More powerful. You begin to see the world through a different set of eyes.

Kindness...timely display..!

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water.

She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large
glass of milk He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?""You don't owe me anything," she replied "Mother has taught us never to accept payment for a kindness."

He said... "Then I thank you from my heart."
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt; stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation.
When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her.

He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation
room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.

He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side as she read these
words......

"Paid in full with one glass of milk." (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.
Tears of joy flooded her eyes & happy heart.

Abraham Lincoln’s letter to his son’s teacher

Abraham Lincoln’s letter to his son’s  teacher
(Some critics refute the authorship. But it is an inspiring advice one must read - Murty)

Respected Teacher,

My son will have to learn I know that all men are not just, all men are not true.
But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader.

Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend. It will take time, I know; but teach him, if you can, that a dollar earned is far more valuable than five found.

Teach him to learn to lose and also to enjoy  winning. Steer him away from envy, if you can.
Teach him the secret of quite laughter.
Let him learn early that the bullies are the easiest to tick.

Teach him, if you can, the wonder of books.. but also give him quiet time to ponder over the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on a green hill –side.

In school teach him it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat.

Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if every one tells him they are wrong.

Teach him to be gentle with gentle people and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when every one is getting on the bandwagon.

Teach him to listen to all men but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth and take only the good that comes through.

Teach him, if you can, how to laugh when he is sad.
Teach him there is no shame in tears.
Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too much sweetness.
Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the highest bidders; but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob… and to stand and fight if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently; but do not cuddle him because only the test of fire makes fine steel

Let him have the courage to be impatient, let him have the patience to be brave.

Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order; but see what you can do.
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son.

Abraham Lincoln.

Once upon a time

The interesting story received by mail from one of our friends : story about a software engineer, who tried to live out the moral story learnt during his childhood. Read on...
***

Once upon a time,

....there was a software engineer who used to develop programs on his Pentium machine, sitting under a tree on the banks of a river. He used to earn his bread by selling those programs in the Sunday market.

One day, while he was working, his machine tumbled off the table and fell in the river. Encouraged by the Panchatantra story of his childhood ( the woodcutter and the axe )

He started praying to the River Goddess. The River Goddess wanted to test him and so appeared only after one month of rigorous prayers. The engineer told her that he had lost his computer in the river.

As usual, the Goddess wanted to test his honesty. She showed him a match box and asked,

Is this your computer ?

Disappointed by the Goddess' lack of computer awareness, the engineer replied, No.

She next showed him a pocket-sized calculator and asked if that was his.

Annoyed, the engineer said

No, not at all !!

Finally, she came up with his own Pentium machine and asked if it was his.

The engineer, left with no option, sighed and said Yes.
The River Goddess was happy with his honesty.

She was about to give him all three items, but before she could make the offer, the engineer asked her, Don't you know that you're supposed to show me some better computers before bringing up my own ?

The River Goddess, angered at this, replied, I know that, you stupid donkey! The first two things I showed you were the Trillennium and the Billennium, the latest computers from IBM !. So saying, she disappeared with the Pentium!!

Heart : A Beautiful Garden

A beautiful and thoughtful reflection collected in my mail box :

Once a Junior School teacher asked her students to bring some potatoes in a plastic bag to school. Each potato will be given a name of the person whom that child hates. Like this, the number of potatoes will be equal to the number of persons they hate. On a decided day the children brought their potatoes well addressed. Some had two, some had three and some had even five potatoes.

The teacher said they have to carry these potatoes with them everywhere they go for a week. As the days passed the children started to complain about the spoiled smell that started coming from these potatoes. Also some students who had many potatoes complained that it was very heavy to carry them all around. The children got rid of this assignment after a week, when it got over.
The teacher asked, "How did you feel in this one week?" The children discussed their problems about the smell and weight. Then the teacher said, "This situation is very similar to what you carry in your heart when you don't like some people. This hatred makes your heart unhealthy and you carry that hatred in your heart everywhere you go. If you can’t bear the smell of spoiled potatoes for a week, imagine the impact of this hatred that you carry throughout your life, on your heart?"

* Our heart is a beautiful garden that needs a regular cleaning of unwanted weeds.
* Forgive those who have not behaved with you as expected and forget the bad things. this also makes room available for storing good things.

True Love

collection from my mail box :

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman, probably in his 80s, arrived to have
stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him.
I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.
On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'

He smiled as he patted my hand and said,

'She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.'

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, 'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'
True love is neither physical, nor romantic.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.

Make me into TV

A teacher from Primary School asks her students to write a essay about what they would like God to do for them...

At the end of the day while marking the essays, she read one that made her very emotional.

Her husband, that had just walked in saw her crying and asked her: What happened?

She answered - "Read this. It's one of my students essays"
***
"Oh God, tonight I ask you something very special: Make me into a television.
I want to take its place. Live like the TV in my house.
Have my own special place, And have my family around ME.
To be taken seriously when I talk.... I want to be the centre of attention and be heard without interruptions or questions.
I want to receive the same special care that the TV receives when it is not working. Have the company of my dad when he arrives home from work, even when he is tired.
And I want my mom to want me when she is sad and upset, instead of ignoring me... And... I want my brothers to fight to be with me... I want to feel that family just leaves everything aside, every now and then, just to spend some time with me.
And last but not least make it that I can make them all happy and entertain them... Lord I don't ask you for much... I just want to live like every TV"
***
At that moment the husband said: 'My God, poor kid. What horrible parents!'

She looked up at him and said:

"That essay is our son's!!!"

WHAT IS MOTIVATION

An excerpt from one of the mails i've received..

WHAT IS MOTIVATION

When I woke up this morning lying in bed, I was asking myself;
What are some of the secrets of success in life?
I found the answer right there, in my very room.

The Fan said ... Be cool
The Roof said .... Aim High
The window said .... See the world
The Clock said .... Every minute is precious
The Mirror said.... Reflect before you act
The Calendar said.... Be up-to-date
The Door said... Push hard for your goals
And GOD said
HAVE FAITH IN ME

NAIL IN THE FENCE

Once there was a little boy who had a bad temper.
His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

On first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.

Over the next few weeks, as the boy learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.
The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.
He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can puta knife in a man and draw it out.It won't matter how many times you say "I'm sorry", the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one.Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us."

Please forgive me if I have ever left a hole...!

The Other Side

"A Father was reading a magazine and his little daughter every now and then distracted him. To keep her busy, he tore one page on which was printed the map of the world. He tore it into pieces and asked her to go to her room and put them together to make the map again. He was sure she would take the whole day to get it done.
But the little one came back within minutes with perfect map.
When he asked how she could do it so quickly, she said, 'Oh… Dad, there is a man's face on the other side of the paper. I made the face perfect to get the map right."" she ran outside to play leaving the father surprised.."

SELFLESS LOVE

One of the best mails i have received. Really moving.

My wife called, 'How long will you be with that newspaper? Will you come here & make your darling daughter eat her food?

I tossed the paper away & rushed to the scene.
My only daughter, Sindu, looked frightened; tears were welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a bowl filled to its brim with curd rice.
Sindu is a nice child, quite intelligent for her age.

I cleared my throat & picked up the bowl. 'Sindu darling, why don't you take a few mouthful of this curd rice? Just for Dad's sake dear.
Sindu softened a bit & wiped her tears with the back of her hands. 'Ok, Dad.. I will eat - not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot of this.
But, you should...' Sindu hesitated. 'Dad, if I eat this entire curd rice, will you give me whatever I ask for?'
'Promise'. I covered the pink soft hand extended by my daughter with mine, & clinched the deal. Now I became a bit anxious.

'Sindu, dear, you shouldn't insist on getting a computer or any such expensive items. Dad does not have that kind of money right now. Ok?'
'No, Dad. I do not want anything expensive'. Slowly & painfully, she finished eating the whole quantity. I was silently angry with my wife & my mother for forcing my child to eat something that she detested.

After the ordeal was through, Sindu came to me with her eyes wide with expectation. All our attention was on her..

(...click on 'read more' to read the rest of the story).

'Dad, I want to have my head shaved off, this Sunday!' was her demand.

'Atrocious!' shouted my wife, 'A girl child having her head shaved off?
Impossible!' 'Never in our family!' My mother rasped. 'She has been watching too much of TV. Our culture is getting totally spoiled with this TV programs!'

'Sindu, darling, why don't you ask for something else? Well be sad seeing you with a clean-shaven head.' 'Please, Sindu, why don't you try to understand our feelings?' I tried to plead with her..

'Dad, you saw how difficult it was for me to eat that Curd Rice'. Sindu was in tears. '& you promised to grant me whatever I ask for.
Now, you are going back on your words. Was it not you who told me the story of King Harishchandra, its moral that we should honor our promises no matter what?'

It was time for me to call the shots. 'Our promise must be kept.' 'Are you out of your mind?' chorused my mother & wife. 'No. If we go back on our promises, she will never learn to honour her own. Sindu, your wish will be fulfilled.'

With her head clean-shaven, Sindu had a round-face & her eyes looked big & beautiful.
On Monday morning, I dropped her at her school. It was a sight to watch my hairless Sindu walking towards her classroom. She turned around & waved.

I waved back with a smile. Just then, a boy alighted from a car & shouted, 'Sinduja, please wait for me!'

What struck me was the hairless head of that boy. 'May be, that is the in-stuff', I thought.

'Sir, your daughter Sinduja is great indeed!' Without introducing herself, a lady got out of the car, & continued, 'that boy who is walking along with your daughter is my son Harish. He is suffering from... leukemia'.

She paused to muffle her sobs. 'Harish could not attend the school for the whole of the last month. He lost all his hair due to the side effects of the chemotherapy. He refused to come back to school fearing the unintentional but cruel teasing of the schoolmates. Sinduja visited him last week & promised him that she will take care of the teasing issue.

But, I never imagined she would sacrifice her lovely hair for the sake of my son!
Sir, you & your wife are blessed to have such a noble soul as your daughter..'

I stood transfixed & then, I wept.. 'My little Angel, you are teaching me how selfless real love is!'

The happiest people are not those who live on their own termsbut are those who change their terms for the ones whom they love

LIFE

Read Somewhere...
To make money we lose our health,
and then to restore our health we lose our money..
We live as if we are never going to die,
and we die as if we never lived...

And to add.. a line from Orkut.
" Study as if you were to live forever.
Live as if you were to die tomorrow"

W.I.S.D.O.M.

W.I.S.D.O.M.
Don't look for the flaws as you go through life;
And even when you find them,
It is wise and kind to be somewhat blind.
Just look for the virtue behind them;
For the cloudiest night has a tint of light
Somewhere in its shadows hiding.
It is by far to look for a star;
Then the spots on the sun abiding.
The world will never adjust itself
To suit your whims to the letter
Something goes wrong your whole life long
And the sooner you know it the better.
It is folly to fight with the infinite.
And go under at last in the wrestle.
The wiser man shapes into God’s plan,
As water shapes into a vessel…..

WHAT IS SUCCESS

WHAT IS SUCCESS
What is Success ?
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
And the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beuty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
A healthy child, a garden patch
Or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
Easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeed.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The lines look simple .. but to achieve such success, we have to have enormous conviction, tremendous insight and courage to change the distorted views of success which are harbouring in our minds so far...
I would like to share few words from my story, "గెలుపు"
